Petunia is a very famous flower for its beautiful colorful trumpet-shaped flowers. Its leaves are hairy and branchy. This plant likes a sunny spot. For the same reason, it is very famous in the United States of America and all the Mediterranean countries. It blooms from early spring to autumn and its flowers are one of the most easily recognizable in the world.
Depending on the type of plant, we can find petunias of many different types, lengths, and colors. For example, single or double flowering petunia, monochromatic, uniform or scattered petunia. In its wide range of colors we can see red, white, pink, purple, light blue, yellow and flowers of almost all colors. Black petunia petals are a sight to behold!
The reason why petunia has such a wide variety is that over the years, scientists have developed various methods, such as virus infection, that cause a variety of colors to emerge on its petals. Using these methods, almost every producer can make his or her own combination of colors.
Some of the most well-known species are Petunia grandiflora, Petunia milliflora and Petunia multiflora.
Petunia grandiflora produces the largest flowers, which can reach 40 (16 inches) in length. However, in this category we can also find its hanging varieties. Usually, its beautiful wavy flowers need to be protected from rain and wind.
Petunia milliflora, has the smallest flowers. Petunia milliflora reaches no more than 25 cm (10 in) in length. Unlike grandiflora, this plant has little protection from rain. Here we can find hanging types as well as horizontal growing types, which are suitable for bundling.
Petunia multiflora has smaller flowers than Petunia grandiflora but larger than Petunia milliflora.
Whatever type you choose, keep in mind that these plants need to be kept in a sunny location. When kept in direct sunlight, the color of the flowers becomes very deep and bright.
