What is Fenugreek?

Fenugreek is a popular herb in India. Fenugreek is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region, southern Europe and parts of western Asia. Fenugreek leaves and seeds are used. Fenugreek is also used in food due to its taste and aroma and fenugreek is used in many Ayurvedic medicines.

Fenugreek requires adequate sunlight and fertile soil to grow, so it is commonly cultivated in India. The name of India is also included in the largest producers of fenugreek. Fenugreek leaves are used as a vegetable and spices and medicines are prepared from its seeds.

Fenugreek is also used to improve the taste of certain medicines. Apart from this, fenugreek is also useful in home remedies and in the treatment of many disorders and diseases. Fenugreek is present in the kitchen of every household in India due to its medicinal effect on the digestive system.

Talking about the history of fenugreek, in ancient times fenugreek paste was applied to the dead bodies by the Greeks before they were buried in the tomb. Fenugreek is used in place of non-caffeinated alternatives to coffee due to its strong aroma and taste. Fenugreek is also useful in home-prepared beverages and medicines.

The benefits of fenugreek seeds for the skin are –
Fenugreek has many miraculous medicinal properties for the skin. Its anti-oxidant quality protects the skin from free-radical damage and relieves the signs of aging on the skin. Apart from wrinkles, fenugreek is also useful in healing boils, eczema and burns due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also able to get rid of stubborn scars.

Fenugreek contains an element called diosgenin which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that reduce acne and other skin problems. Fenugreek seeds moisturize your skin and provide nourishment to the skin and ward off dryness.

To improve the glow and health of the skin –

Make a paste by mixing one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in plain yogurt.
Apply this paste on your face.
Wait for 30 minutes and then wash it off by scrubbing it with your fingers.
This removes the dead skin cells from the face.
Finally, wash your face with cold water.
Repeat this process once a week.

Benefits of fenugreek for hair –
Fenugreek is also very good for hair growth due to its high protein content. In fact, protein makes hair thick and healthy and strong. It also helps in rebuilding the hair follicles, which is important for treating hair loss. Apart from this, the lecithin present in it maintains the moisture of the hair.

Medicinal properties of fenugreek control diabetes
Fenugreek seeds are extremely beneficial for sugar patients. Its hypoglycemic property helps in controlling the level of sugar in the blood. Apart from this, the fiber contained in it slows down the absorption of carbohydrates and sugar.

A 2009 study published in the International Journal of Vitamin and Nutrition Research found that the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of fenugreek seeds were excellent for patients with type 2 diabetes. This study shows that consuming 10 grams of fenugreek seeds soaked in hot water is helpful in controlling high blood sugar.

According to another 2009 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, consuming foods made from fenugreek seeds helps the body fight insulin resistance.

To reduce high blood sugar –

Leave 1 to 2 teaspoons of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water overnight to soak / swell. The next morning, drink that water on an empty stomach and chew the fenugreek seeds and eat it. Repeat this process daily.
You can also eat baked goods with fenugreek flour.

Note – Consuming fenugreek seeds along with diabetes medicines can lower your blood sugar level too much, so consult your doctor once before consuming fenugreek seeds.

The benefits of eating fenugreek are helpful in increasing breast milk.
Consuming fenugreek seeds is considered beneficial for women who are breastfeeding babies. It contains phytoestrogens that increase milk production in lactating mothers. It is an excellent source of galactagogues which increase the amount of breast milk. For this, the use of both fenugreek seeds and leaves is good.

According to a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicines in 2011, drinking galactagogues tea not only increases the quantity of milk, but it also increases its quality. It is also believed to help the newborn achieve a healthy weight. It contains vitamins and magnesium that enhance the quality of milk and enhance the overall health of the baby. It is also a solution to problems like obesity and body-ache due to Vata after the child is born.

To improve the quantity and quality of breast milk –

Soak a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water overnight. The next morning, boil the water along with the seeds for a few minutes and then strain it. Drink it every morning.
You can also consume some fresh fenugreek leaves with soups and salads.
To increase milk flow, you can take one capsule (at least 500 mg) of fenugreek seeds 3 times daily. But for this first consult a doctor.
If your baby shows signs of diarrhoea, stop taking it.

Note – A person suffering from asthma or diabetes should ask the doctor once before consuming fenugreek seeds.

The properties of fenugreek seeds are to reduce cholesterol –
According to studies, fenugreek seeds have the ability to lower cholesterol, especially it reduces LDL ie “bad” cholesterol. Fenugreek seeds contain a flavonoid called naringenin that lowers lipid levels in people with high cholesterol.

The soluble fiber contained in it helps in reducing the cholesterol level in the body by increasing the viscosity of the digested food. Harmful cholesterol can block the blood vessels and the affected person can have a heart attack or stroke. Fenugreek seeds are extremely helpful in reducing harmful cholesterol.

To reduce the level of high cholesterol, consume two ounces i.e. about 57 grams of fenugreek seeds daily.
Roast the dried fenugreek seeds and then grind them to make a powder. You can use this powder by sprinkling it on food or with water.

Disadvantages of Fenugreek –

Do not consume fenugreek in large quantities, as it can cause nausea and diarrhea.
Before using it, use it on a small amount of skin to check that you are not allergic to it or irritation and rashes.
Do not use this herb during pregnancy.
If you are taking any kind of medication, consult your doctor before including this herb in your diet.
Indigestion, heartburn, gas, bloating and urine odor may occur when fenugreek is consumed.
